Andrews' Endowed Trustees Print

When Thomas Andrews left money in his will to establish a school in Holybourne, he stated that there should be a group of Trustees to administer the Trust Fund and ensure that it was spent correctly.  At the time, Thomas Andrews was quite a wealthy landowner.  He owned the rights to a number of 'Fee Farms' in the local area, and to a Freehold Inn in London, 'The Swan Inn' in Coleman Street.  The rents from the farms, the Inn and the other lands became part of the Trust fund. Since 1719, there has been a Board of Trustees to oversee the Fund.

Over the early years of the school, the lands were sold off or passed into different hands.  The pub no longer exists, although there is still a 'Swan Alley' off Coleman Street.  There is now a small amount of money remaining, with no land rents.  The Trustees manage this money, ensuring that it both benefits existing pupils at the school and remains to provide benefit for the pupils of the future.  Accounts are audited annually, via the Charities Commission.

In the early days, part of the fund was used to provide clothing and shoes for the pupils of the school.  Pupils with the surname 'Andrews' were singled out for extra treats!  The Hampshire Archive holds early records of the school, including pattern books with scraps of cloth relating to the suits that were made for the boys, and the dresses (which the girls had to make for themselves).

The Trustees are a separate body from the Governing Body of the school.  They oversee the small financial legacy which remains from Thomas Andrews' orginal donation.  The Trustees meet termly, in the School House.  They hear a report from the Headteacher about the school, which may include anonymised requests for financial support for any families in hardship, and for financial contributions towards major projects the school is undertaking.

The Trust provided a significant financial contribution towards our recent classroom building project.  The Trust has also set aside some money to refurbish the audio visual equipment in the School Hall when the School Hall is refurbished in the near future.

The current membership of the Board of Trustees is:

Mrs Jill Robinson (Chair)

Mr Jeremy Wood (Treasurer)

Ms Sally Lloyd (Secretary)

Mr David Andrews

Mrs Fry

Councillor Andrew Joy

Mrs Maria Lloyd (Headteacher)
