Music is an important part of our curriculum at Andrews’ Endowed CE Primary School to develop spiritual depth for our children. All classes have a music lesson each week and the children learn to play simple tuned and untuned percussion instruments and sing songs focusing on the sense of pattern, sequence and order that is created through different music compositions . The children often perform what they have been learning  to parents and friends as part of their termly Class Assembly.

Learning a musical instrument

For children who would like to learn to play a musical instrument in school, individual and group lessons are available via the Hampshire Music Service. Lessons can start once a child moves into Key Stage 2. During the summer term when they are still in Year 2, a number of taster lessons are offered to help children find the most suitable instrument. Currently, we can offer lessons in guitar, cello, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, cornet and trombone. Most families choose a group lesson option, but it is possible to arrange solo lessons for an additional cost.

To find out more about current availability and lesson fees, please contact Mrs Christine White in the school office

Singing is an integral part of our daily life at school providing our children with a sense of life’s joys and achievements. Children are taught a variety of songs both in class and in whole school singing assemblies. Our singing assemblies are lively events, where the children, right from the age of 4, are taught how to follow a melody, understand the rhythm and dynamics of a song, and to participate in increasingly complex part songs and rounds. They provide our children with a sense of self– worth and the worth of others. We use a variety of actions, Makaton and BSL signs to support our singing. Children are encouraged to opt to sing small group and solo parts within our songs, which they regularly do with confidence. We take up opportunities to participate in singing events locally, such as the ‘Eggar’s Big Sing’.
