PE PREMIUM

Since the London Olympics in 2012, the Government has provided primary and secondary schools with additional PE funding to encourage greater uptake of sport among young people and potentially help develop the Olympians of the future.

Having an impact

Swimming is part of the National Curriculum for PE for Primary School children in England. The DfE expectation is as follows:

Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:

·        swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

·        use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

·        perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Primary schools are expected to publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum expectations. At Andrews’ Endowed, all children receive swimming instruction when they are in Y4. Lessons take place at Alton Sports Centre. In Y6, our children visit Calshot Outdoor Centre in Southampton for a week long residential. Some of the activities are water based, and provide the children with a chance to learn more about water safety.

Our multi-weather running track is having an impact on our children’s stamina.  The children are using the track during break times and lunch times to develop their daily exercise routines.

“The physical education and sports funding for primary schools is spent judiciously to increase the number of pupils participating in sporting activities on a regular basis and to improve the expertise of both staff and pupils.” Ofsted 2016
